I've learned a LOT from this thread. I'll be the first one to admit, however, that I'm a complete newb when it comes to building a great custom budget gaming PC... but the thing is, that's exactly what I want to do. And this thread has opened my eyes to a lot of essential stuff.

However, I've gotta admit I'm still unsuare about a few things. Like I said, I'm a complete newb... I've never built a PC myself before. I have no idea how to overclock a CPU, even if it is easy with the AMD 9850 Black. Hell, I don't even know how to change a PC's BIOS settings. :(

So with that in mind, I have some questions. I'd appreciate it if you, Mal, could help me out, but anyone knowlegable about PC hardware can pitch in. :)

1. What motherboard would you reccomend using... assuming that I plan on going with the AMD 9850 black CPU & the HD 4870 card? Low cost and future customizability are pluses.

2. How would one go about overclocking the AMD 9850 black? I know you mentioned that it is easy and that you need a 3rd party cooling unit to make it work... but like I said I've never done anything like this before. I'm very interested in learning how to do it, so any links to read-ups (or you can just explain it) on how to overclock a CPU would be very helpful to me. :) Also, I checked CP's 'overclocking' forum, but nothing really useful was there.

4. What operating system should I use? I basically either want to go Visa 64 bit or good ole XP Home/SP3. Which would you reccomend and why?

5. With that set-up, what wattage of power supply would you suggest? 600? More?

6. Yeah yeah... I know it's painfully annoying how much of a newb I am when it comes to building a custom PC. But I very much would like to do it. And since I've NEVER done it before, I need some light shed on even the BASICS... lol. So do you know of any good links to read-ups on building one's own custom PC? This would be EXTREMELY helpful to me.

Any help is appreciated. Again, great read-up, helped me learn a lot... the stuff on building a great machine on a low-budget is EXTREMELY helpful (just need a bit more help, that's all). :)

Hi Jared

Mal has not been around for a while.  I and everyone else miss him terribly.  I think he was discouraged because of the number of bad build and customer service posts recently.

Post your questions in a new thread in this category.  There are still a number of really good and qualified people on the forum who will be glad to help you.

Alan

Mal come back, you are missed and we need you.

Well... it seems that he was around these forums on the 11th (just a few days ago). I wouldn't make any assumptions quite yet.

Further, the questions can be answered by anyone who is willing to help, but you're right, it would probably be best to post my questions in a new thread. Thanks.

Wish they had a special area that would get threads with many many views in a special area so I did not have to keep bumping this.  Its too good to let go though so keep on moving it up....
