A famous FPS indeed.
I will share with you some rather basic but non-the-less awesome tips and hints.

WEAPONS
This is just a few weapons I think are worthy of mentioning.

Knife - Always stab with the knife (the slow animation) - this will take away around 65 or so health. Two stabs are lethal. Back stabbing is much more deadly and has the potential of killing your opponent in one hit.

Glock - Use the alternative fire mode for the Glock (Terrorist Default Pistol) for a better chance at a headshot at close distances.

Desert Eagle (Deagle)- Easily the favorite pistol within the game. Very nice. I reccomend using this one or Dual 96G Elite Berettas.

Five Seven - I would advise you to skip this one.

Pump Action Shotgun
- If you can aim good, the shotgun is a very good weapon at close distances. Great for headshots.

Automatic Shotgun - For those who can't aim that quickly, good against the pump action shotgun.

P90 - This is a quick fire weapon, 50 bullet rounds, but not as good at far ranges as others below.

IMI Galil - A very good Terrorist Weapon, great for headshots when money is tight. I see it better than Ak-47 for distance headshots.

FAMAS - Normal fire mode for close distances, alternate fire mode for far away / headshots.

M4A1 and AK 47 - Default Weapons. AK 47 is much more precise when firing in bursts. M4A1 has silences which is useless, unless you want to play it stealthy and give less damage.

Steyr AUG A1 - Much better then the terrorist SG-552 Commando. Very precise.

Scout
- The cheap sniper rifle. Two hits or one headshot to kill with this one. Faster then the AWP.

AWP - The Big Sniper Rifle. One Shot One Kill Most of The Time. Slow, Clumsy at close battles, very accurate, goes good with the desert eagle. Use for long distances ONLY.

Automatic Sniper Rifles - Less Power, More Speed, Less Accuracy, Bette at close ranges.

Machine Gun - Good for dropping in right in the middle of a bunch of enemies.

NADES

Grenade - You don't want to be caught holding it by the enemy. I would recommend throwing it somewhere where the enemy is or might be. It is not powerful enough to kill the enemy, but gets pretty close. Note, this hurts you if you mess up.

Smoke Grenade - confuses bots more then real opponents, but does a good job of distorting the view. The least useful of the bunch.

Flash Bang - Perfect for blinding people. Note, it will blind you and your teammates as well. Flash a room, go in it and shoot all those blinded everyone.

GENERAL HINTS

Use the quick keys for buying things - it saves you a lot of time to press B and then A and be ready.

If you truly never played the game, practice with bots on easy.

Do not rush into a room that has a good chance of being filled with terrorists, do it with a few people, or attempt to weed them out. It is always easier to go one versus one. Also such situations are what nades and flashbangs are used for.

The radar gives your position, the positions of your teammates, and it tells you if your teammates see enemies. The radar is useful.

ALWAYS AIM FOR THE HEAD FIRST. That how you kill with ease.

When alone, do not forget to reload. That last bullet can save your life.

Standing Still = More Firing Accuracy
Ducking = More Firing Accuracy
Zooming In (If Weapon Allows it) = More Firing Accuracy
Shooting one bullet at a time and not spamming bullets = more accuracy

Do not use the above accuracy tips in close combat.

There will always be people who such more then you and rock more than you.

Friendly Fire determines if you can harm your teammates.

HINTS / TIPS

Do not enable Aniti Aliasing or Bloom or HDR. They look nice but obstruct the clarity of your view.

Make sure you are accustomed to your mouse and keyboard. A touch pad WONT do.

Sound is important. Put on a good pair of headphones, set the sound quality to high, and listen. You will be able to tell the distance of the enemy by their steps.

PING MATTERS A LOT. Ping determines how long it takes the signal from your computer to reach the server, the less the BETTER. Firewalls, router firewalls will give you worse ping. Downloading something in the background will screw your ping. Vista and XP have a lot of things that will degrade your ping, use google to get some tweaks to reduce it. With my current tweaked windows - I get 55-65 ping lowest, before it was around 75 - 85.

Choose servers with low ping. I would recommend less then a 100.

Sniper rifles do not have a cursor. Every weapon best point of fire / crosshair is centered in the middle of the screen thus you can get a marker and mark the very middle of your screen. You will get many more kills on maps like scoutknivez.

CONSOLE COMMANDS

Entering These Will Let You More Clearly See The Damage you Inflict Upon Enemies,

violence_ablood "1"
violence_agibs "1"
violence_hblood "1"
violence_hgibs "1"

Small Crosshair greatly helps with accuracy.

cl_crosshairscale 4750

This will disable rag dolls, (less abstraction to your view)

cl_ragdoll_physics_enable "0"

OTHER GAME TYPES

There are other 3rd party maps and mods for CS:S.

Zombie mod servers include a game of survival - where you barricade yourself against zombies for if they touch you you become a zombie. Zombies have lots of health, but they have hard time against the barricades. This gameplay is time lengthy and cheesy I would say.

Surf Maps use modefied physics where acceleration is much more multiplied and thus you can slide on a tilted surfaces at great speeds and jump between them. To surf you use the strafe keys and aiming for direction. Strafe toward the top while looking straight. If you don't hold the strafe button down, gravity will pull you off.

Thats it for now. Enjoy.
