Back to The Colony you go. Alkimia Interactive’s complete remake of the beloved, euro-jank cult classic is out now. Here’s what it takes to run this stunning remake, and the PCs we recommend for revisiting this classic.

Gothic Remake Gameplay

Gothic Remake is a ground-up reconstruction of Piranha Bytes’ 2001 RPG. The setup story setup is the same as the 2001 original. A magical accident has created a sealed dome around a penal mining colony. The Barrier, as it’s known in game.

Inside The Barrier, the original prison hierarchy has collapsed entirely. Three factions now run the Colony. These are the Old Camp, which manages the ore mining operation and has the ear of the King on the outside, the New Camp, a rebel organization seeking a way to break the Barrier and escape; and the Sect Camp, a group of religous zealots who believe the Sleeper, an ancient entity imprisoned beneath the Colony, holds the keys to the Colony’s salvation. You play as nameless convict who is thrown over the Barrier with nothing but the clothes on your back. Right before being thrown in, you are given a letter from a fire mage, and tasked with getting that letter to the High Magican of Fire who resides in the Old Camp. From there it’s up to you to make your way in the sealed penal colony.

If all of this has you curious but you are not sure if you want to dive in, there is a free demo available right now that let’s you experience the prologue and opening of the game. It’s a good way to see how the game runs on your hardware and get a feel for if this is a game you want to see through. And you can always try out the original, which will run on a potato at this point.

FAQs

Do I need to have played the original Gothic to enjoy the remake?

No. Gothic Remake is a complete, self-contained experience and a full rebuild of the original game, making it a perfect way to jump in to this series. You will be experiencing the story, from the beginning. That said, you should go in to the game knowing that it does not hold your hand in the way many modern games do. You will feel weak, confused, and lost. But as you gain real life experience playing the game, and experience on your character, you will feel every bit of progression more as you character become someone who is actually quite capable. It’s about the journey here. Enjoy it!
