It was in March 2017 when PUBG Corporation, a subsidiary of Bluehole Studios, released an early-access multiplayer online battle royale game steam titled “PlayerUnknown’s Battleground.” Since then, the game has amassed millions of players worldwide, selling over 24 million copies after its full release last December 20.
And if that’s not enough, PUBG has hit over 3 million concurrent players on Steam before the year ended. It shattered all records for most concurrent players, and this was confirmed by the Steam database.
Before PUBG was released, Dota 2 held the record. But at the time, the famous free-to-play MOBA game has only ever had a maximum of 1.29 million players at one time. And to put that in perspective, Dota 2 had just 704,938 concurrent players on the same day that PUBG broke the record. That number is still more than most games available on Steam.
The statistics are incredible, considering that the number of people on Steam usually hits around 11 to 17 million. And currently, PUBG holds a considerable part of that, also given that there are hundreds of games that offer the same genre.
But PUBG’s achievement wasn’t an overnight success. Although it became the most-watched game on Twitch, it didn’t hit 1 million concurrent players. It did when Tencent offered PUBG Corporation to publish the game in China six months after release. The launch of the formal 1.0 version of the game also boosted the game’s popularity.
And that popularity isn’t going to die out soon. There are millions and millions of battle royale players, and these numbers are steadily rising.
