GreedFall: The Dying World Gameplay
GreedFall: The Dying World is a third-person RPG, clearly inspired by Dragon Age origins, developed by Spiders. A prequel to the sort of cult classic 2019 Greedfall, the game transports you to the dying continent of Gacane, the homeland of the colonizers from the first game. Ravaged by the Malichor plague, slowly being ripped apart by warring factions, and steeped in political treachery. You play as Vriden Gerr, a native of Teer Fradee who has been ripped from their island home and forced into the brutal reality of the mainland.
Gacane is a fully explorable open world. The prequel goes deep into the lore only hinted at in the first game, expanding the world with more factions, more locations, and a story centered on political scheming and a struggle for freedom.
The biggest gameplay evolution in The Dying World is the overhauled tactical combat system. Inspired by beloved BioWare classics like Dragon Age: Origins and KOTOR, the game features a tactical real time with pause combat system that puts you in direct tactical control of your entire party. You directly control all four party members, issuing commands that consume Action Points — whether to chain abilities, exploit high ground, trigger explosive barrels, or coordinate devastating combo attacks. Your AI companions are now fully under your command, making every engagement feel like a true tactical operation.
Companions are central to the experience. Characters like Nilan, your stubborn childhood friend with a deep bond to the land; Fausta, the shape-shifting noble diplomat from Thélème; and Sybille, the wary but fiercely loyal de Vespe scion all bring their own skill trees and personalities to your squad. Build them up, romance them, and forge bonds that will shape the story through your choices. Every decision has consequences across Gacane’s web of warring factions.
Improved crafting lets you brew potions, create traps, and upgrade your gear; while an extensive character creator along with deep build customization let’s you define exactly how you approach the game, both inside an out of combat. Whether you’re a diplomatic negotiator or a steel-and-sorcery warrior, The Dying World rewards your playstyle.

The addition of the new style of tactical pause combat is the biggest difference from the first game. Whereas the first game saw you engaging in combat a la Witcher 3 style combat, Greedfall the Dying world plays more like Dragon Age: Origins. You can pause combat at any moment to queue up actions for each of your party members. You can then unpause and watch it all play out in real time. The are a variety of options for how the combat works, you can approach it more tactically, pausing regularly to issue commands or you can control just one character and play more like the first game, with combat working like it does in Dragon Age: Inquisition.
