Crimson Desert Gameplay
Crimson Desert is an open world action-adventure game and published by Pearl Abyss, the studio behind the long running action combat MMORPG, Black Desert Online. Originally conceived as a prequel to the MMO, Crimson Desert would continue to evolve throughout its development during into a single player title set in its own universe. After years of delays since its initial reveal at the 2020 Game Awards, the game launches tomorrow (March 19, 2026) globally on for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
You take control of Kliff, leader of the Greymanes, a mercenary company fighting to survive in war torn Pywel. You’ll spend a majority of the campaign controlling Kliff, but there are other controllable characters to play as, each with their own unique moves and abilities.
Pywel is a massive open world, lush forests, ruined cities, treacherous mountain passes, sky islands, and the mysterious depths of the Abyss all waiting to be explored. The world is alive with variety of rival factions. The game emphasizes that exploration and discovery is the key to powering up your character, it is not an RPG where you level up in a traditional sense. Your curiosity is rewarded at every turn: hidden dungeons, optional bosses, and other interesting tales to be told are tucked throughout the continent for players willing to venture off the main path.
The combat system is the real highlight of the game. It is built around Kliff’s fluid, combo driven moveset that offers a surprising amount of depth. You can equip a wide variety of weapons and layer on elemental effects to exploit enemy weaknesses and chain together devastating sequences, much like a fighting game or character action game. The game also features horseback combat, a pilotable mech, a rideable dragon, and more they probably haven’t shown of yet. You’ll put all these skills to test against a whopping 76 different bosses.
Supporting this strong action combat is a deep crafting and progression loop. You’ll gather materials across Pywel to upgrade weapons, brew consumables, and customize you build.
