The popular online battle-royale video game “Player Unknown’s Battleground” is set to have its first official esports tournament this summer.
Its developers, PUBG Corp., has announced the news through a press release. The esports tournament will be called the PUBG Global Invitational 2018 and will take place in Berlin, Germany from July 25 to 29. Twenty professional teams from around the globe will compete for a $2 million prize pool. The teams will be selected via regional qualifying tournaments that will be held in North America, Asia, and Europe during the weeks leading up to the competition.
According to the company, the tournament will offer two first-place prizes, one each for the first-person perspective and third-person perspective. The gameplay during the invitational will be composed of four-player squad battles in the third person perspective which will be held on July 25 and 26. It will then be followed by the first-person perspective matches on July 28 and 29.
“The PUBG Global Invitational 2018 is a landmark moment for PUBG Corp. as a showcase of the potential of ‘PUBG’ esports,” said Changhan Kim, CEO of PUBG Corp. “The team at PUBG Corp. is working tirelessly to ensure that the PGI 2018 exemplifies the pinnacle of ‘PUBG’ competition and brings to life all of the excitement, tension, and exhilaration of the highest level of ‘PUBG’ play.”
PUBG has finally been able to push through with the tournament after adding their recent updates to their spectator experience. The new in-game camera system will now allow the spectators to zoom in and out on the action they want to highlight, enhancing the ability to provide live commentary. Not only that, the game is now able to record entire matches, capturing all the details for future replays. The said features were not included during PUBG’s Gamescom Invitational, so fans should expect a better watching experience this time around.
PUBG Corp. said that it will release more information on ticket sales and regional qualifiers soon.
Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds is a last-man-standing shooter video game developed by PUBG Corporation. The game has gained massive popularity upon its release and is currently one of the most popular games online. PUBG is available to download for Microsoft Windows PCs and gaming laptops, and for PS4 and XBox One consoles.
