Ever since Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag was released, fans of the game couldn’t get enough of the Naval Combat and Travel System that was featured in the game. And although we got a few naval combat experiences in Origins, fans were still hoping that the naval combat will be put into the spotlight for the next games. So when Odyssey, the upcoming game in the Assassin’s Creed series was teased, fans were excited to hear that the naval combat feature will be returning to the scene.

And just last August 14, Ubisoft Quebec announced that they are redesigning the naval combat system for Odyssey. In an article posted by IGN, it was stated that the developers are “serving up a fully-overhauled version” of the combat and travel system in the game.

According to Odyssey’s Game Director Scott Phillips, it was a good time to bring back the naval combat and travel feature since fans love it. Origins have touched on the feature and Ubisoft decided to redesign it, building all new tech to support the seamless open-world nature of Odyssey.

In Odyssey, Alexios/Kassandra, the protagonist of the story, is in command of a naval battleship named Adrestia. Since the developers knew that the ship would work very different from 17th-century pirate ships, they made a few substantial tweaks to the intricacies of the system to improve and enhance the action and effects of the naval combat system out on the open water.

When it comes to naval combat, players can now enhance their damage output over the course of the battle. The more damage the enemy ship receives, the more powerful attack options you can get like flaming arrows or fiery javelins.  Ubisoft also noted that landing repeated hits on a certain area of the enemy ship can cause more damage, and thus create a weak spot for you to target with your ship’s ram.

Odyssey is the upcoming and latest video game in the Assassin’s Creed franchise. It is set in the year 431 BCE and revolves around the fictional history of the Peloponnesian War.  The game will follow the story of the protagonist named Alexios or Kassandra, depending on the gender preference of the player. Alexios/Kassandra is a mercenary and is a descendant of King Leonidas, who was thrown away after a prophecy was foretold. As an adult, he/she returns to his hometown and discovers a conspiracy against his/her family.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is scheduled to be released on October 5, 2018, for Microsoft Windows computers and gaming laptops.
