5 Things to Know About Overwatch New Hero Moira

Overwatch has just released their new support hero, Moira, last month. Designed to flank the enemy back line with her immense mobility, her abilities allow her to heal her allies and damage her enemies at the same time. And the best part is, she works for Talon organization alongside Widowmaker and the Reaper, making her Mercy’s counterpart on Overwatch.

And just like any good hero, Moira O’Deorain has a fascinating background, which we’re going to tackle today.

Moira is a geneticist.

Moira O’Deorain is a brilliant and controversial scientist from Ireland. She is best known for her expertise in genetic engineering and her research in rewriting the fundamental building blocks of life. She was only 38 years old when she published a controversial paper about a methodology for creating custom genetic programs which could alter DNA at a cellular level.

However, she was shunned for her research.

Although her research seemed like a promising step toward humanity overcoming diseases and disorders, and maximize human potential, she was shunned for it. Her works were considered to be dangerous because of the perceived ethical shortfalls. She was even accused of having the same unchecked desire for scientific advancement that some believed to have caused the Omnic Crisis.

She was part of Overwatch covert ops division, Blackwatch.

Although her career and reputation were severely damaged by her research, she was offered to work Overwatch covert ops division, Blackwatch. There she continued her work in the shadows while developing new weapons and technologies for the organization. Her employment was strictly kept secret until it was uncovered after Venice incident. It was then that many high-ranking Overwatch officials disavowed all knowledge of her affiliation with them.

After Overwatch disbanded, she became a part of Talon.

After Overwatch disbanded, Moira turned to conventional sources of funding. It was when she was invited to join the scientific collective found in the Oasis, Iraq, and became its Minister of Genetics. It wasn’t long when she was reached by the Talon organization which funded and aided her researches and experiments in exchange for utilizing the results for their own purposes.

Moira was actually the one to experiment on Gabriel Reyes also known as Reaper.

It was Blackwatch’s commander, Gabriel Reyes, who personally recruited her. He wanted someone who could help advise him on matters about genetics. That being said, it wasn’t long till Moira worked on Gabriel. Her experiments on Reyes gave him superhuman abilities, causing his cells to regenerate and decay at a hyper-accelerated rate.
