If you want, you can get Mcafee for a year for free.  Thats how I got mine.

I use NIS 2009 and it's great!  It uses less than 5MB RAM at all times and increases boot time by less than 1 second!

McAfee & Norton reall slow your system down.

I've used Avast for years, and never have had a single virus get to my system.  It caught quite a few though.  In my opinion, it's the best anti-virus out there...and best of all, it's free.

Is Avira about on the same level as Avast?  I'm just curious, because my dad always puts Avira on my sisters laptops.

I have Avast on one machine and Avira on another.  I use Avira for netbooks because it puts very little demand on the system.

Avast is better, overall, and provides a lot more options and services.  It has good reviews and I generally like it better.

There are plenty of antivirus review sites on the net.... google "antivirus review".

All the usual suspects are in all 10 top anti virus program reviews, I think a choice of either will be a good choice.

Reviews can be skewed depending on the website but from an average of ten sites the top five in no particular order:

BitDefender
Norton
Kaspersky
Avast
McAfee
Cyberpower in name only (Upgrade)
e8400 @ 3.6Ghz @1.28v
Gigabyte EP45T-DS3R
Patriot Viper 4GB DDR3
320GB SATA-II HD
MSI Radeon HD 4890 1GB
DVDRW x20
Windows Vista Home Premium 32

I would have honestly said BitDefender is the best, BUT they are slow to update. When windows 7 came out they were one of the last to make their software compatible. I know only because I was paying for their software and it crashed daily on Win 7. Finally I moved to Avast and have never looked back. But you can't go wrong with Bitdefender either. Norton and McAfee though have so much "extra" stuff they add in, that it just makes it pointless. I heard this year Norton is slimming down their software footprint, but I bet its still at least twice as large as Avast.
