It put a new, exciting spin on looter-shooters that hadn’t been seen before, as well as a gorgeous 1:1 scale, digital representation of Manhattan, New York, that was quite impressive. After the game had been out for a while, many gamers wondered how it could be surpassed with a second installment.

The Division 2 was released three years later, in 2019, and did just that, setting the action in a gorgeous rendition of Washington DC and adding all kinds of fun, new gameplay elements, and mechanics. In other words, it took what was good about the first game and threw out what wasn’t so good, as well as offering some new systems into the mix.

Since then, there have several episodic additions that have been pretty darn fun. The third episode re-introduced an old villain from the original 2016 Division title, Aaron Keener, and now Ubisoft has developed an entire proper DLC around him with their new expansion to The Division 2, called Warlords of New York.

In Warlords of New York, you step into the role of a second wave Division Agent tasked with taking down a first wave one, namely Keener. Keener went rogue a while back and has come up with a dastardly plan to destroy society. He figures that if he can cripple the governments of the world, he and his cronies can establish themselves as the new global rulers. But first, he must unleash a super-pandemic called Eclipse upon civilization; think of this new bio-weapon as an evolved (and hence, deadlier) form of the original green poison.

This time around, you play in a smaller version of New York centered around Lower Manhattan. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s any less exciting. On the contrary, everything about the setting looks highly detailed—with sprawling avenues covered by overgrown vegetation, as well as various forms of animal life run amok.

As the DLC’s title suggests, you won’t only be going up against Keener himself, but also his four Warlords who are directly subordinate to him. Each of these lieutenants oversees a portion of territory within the city and you’ll first have to take each of them out before moving onto the big baddie himself.

In an interesting new twist, each of the Warlord utilizes exotic new abilities and you’ll have to adjust your strategies in order to find out what their weaknesses are. Not only that but if you manage to take them down you’ll gain access to skills that are linked to their abilities. These new sub-boss fights are really fun because they force you to really use your brain in order to defeat them and when you do, you have more of a sense of accomplishment.

There are five main missions and eight side ones this time around. Luckily, all of them are quite substantial and take a while to complete. The level cap has been increased from 30 to 40 and there’s also a lot of new loot to gain throughout New York, as well as new skills to unlock. Fortunately, the rather convoluted UI from The Division 2 has been overhauled, making such things as weapon comparison charts and the like, much more accessible for newer players.

Overall, Tom Clancy’s The Division 2: Warlords of New York is a tremendously fun DLC that overhauls many elements from the base game and streamlines things for both newbies and returning veterans alike.

SCORE: 83%

Tom Clancy’s The Division 2: Warlords of New York has some pretty good looking graphics that make its looter-shooter gameplay truly shine. However, you want to have a pretty beefy gaming PC or gaming laptop in order to play it at a decent framerate.
