ok, checked new egg and the cards were there and all suppliers were sold out immediately. good news, the price on the 8 gb card was between 239 and 269 so not a lot of gouging to start the game.

lets see how well they restock and what they offer them for here.

Well it was only the reference coolers. The Nvidia Pascal cards were all the same price also on release for what its worth.

I still don't think there was price gouging on Pascal outside of idiots on Ebay and Amazon. Nvidia said what the price would be on their FE cards then gave a MSRP on the custom cards which everyone knew wouldn't be the price at the start and was most likely to be for stock reference coolers anyway. The custom cards even if they were close to the FE price were still the far better deal.

Still, surprised how many people were all over these without first seeing real trusted benchmarks on the rx 480. It will be a good budget card but it's still only a 1080p GPU IMO. I want a GPU that can give me 60 fps if not more consistently on my native resolution and the RX 480 won't. I'm far more interested in the Vega release..

I already have a Gsync 1440p/144hz monitor and Pascal though so I won't be buying AMD no matter what they release. I basically can't since I have Gsync.

they were not designed to compete with the 1070 and 1080 high end card but to use in gaming computers for everyday gamers who cant 500 to 800 for a video card. that is the whole budget for a lot of gamers.

Yeah, that's why I said I'll be more interested about the Vega release.

Have you looked at reviews? It looks to be averaging about the same FPS as the 390/970. Some people were talking it up far more than that.

Now I'm seeing multiple major reviewers are noticing a problem with the PCIe power. It's drawing 165w + from the PCIe which obviously can only handle 150w max. This could end up being a problem for AMD. Thats not even with people overclocking yet. Hate to see what happens to Mobos if they don't get it fixed.. I also hope that fix isn't lowering clocks to lower wattage.

I sold my 390 for $220 the other day and I've been seeing used 970s/390s going for under $200 and new ones going for $230. Then you're also seeing 980 ti's sale used for $300 and new for $350-400. I think if you can manage the extra $100 then the 980 ti is a far superior way to go. I know that maybe pushing peoples budget a bit..

I will not be recommending the RX 480 until I see proof that it isn't going to cause issues with this PCIe problem. I wouldn't really recommend the reference design anyway so I'll be waiting for custom coolers also.

With 1440 it doesn't keep up on ultra and have to turn down but at 1080 it beats the 960 by 60+ % and the 390 by 20%. For everyday gamers it's best buy for 1080 gaming and will play newest games.

I've seen the reviews? What are you referring to though?

Also according to the HardOCP review it's basically on par with the 390/970 at 1440p on all the games.. That definitely isn't 20% higher and it may average out to be worse than the 390. It destroys the 380x/960 at 1080p but everyone knew it would. Anyway from the 20 or so games I've seen it jumps around quite a bit but usually ends up being right next to the 970 in performance.

HardOCP actually states it performs similarly to the GTX 970. Considering 6 months ago you could find the GTX 970 for under $300 and the 8gb version is $250 I don't see it being that great. The GTX 1070 can be found for $399(cheapest model as of now) and beats a card that was just 1k a few months ago or we can use the 980 ti which was about $600. It isn't just comparable to the titan x or 980 ti like the 480x is to the 970/390. It beats them fairly easily in most games.

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/RX_480/22.html

All 3 of these came up with the same conclusion about the power through the PCIe being a problem.

AMD themselves said this a bit ago "We have received feedback from some of the reviewers on high current observed on PCIE in some cases. We are looking into these scenarios as we speak and reproduce these scenarios internally. Our engineering team is fully engaged."

Here look at this.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/4qfwd4/rx480_fails_pcie_specification/

Seems like this is being updated with all the new information coming out regarding this issue. The list is growing rapidly as to reviewers finding the problem. I'm seeing it's not just review models but also retail versions also.
